Learning Styles

Knowing your learning style. Using the wrong style can be like writing with the wrong hand - you can dso it but it feels uncomfortable and slow.

Here are some basic characteristics of the three learning styles:

Visual Learners:

•take a lot of notes
•sit near the front of the class
•sometimes close their eyes to help remember something
•prefer to see what they are trying to learn
•like illustrations and presentations that use color

Auditory Learners:

•sit where they can hear
•hum, sing, or talk to themselves when bored
•gain knowledge by reading aloud
•remember by reading lessons aloud to themselves

Kinesthetic Learners:

•need to be active
•speak with their hands
•remember what they did, but can't always remember what was said or seen
•move when bored
•sit near the door or somewhere they can get up and move around

Once you know your learning style, you can structure your learning to take advantage of that style. A good rule is to use your strongest learning style. For example, if you want to learn to write emails but your learning style is auditory, try listening to new vocabulary first before learning to spell it.
